September Club Meeting
Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 7:15 p.m.
Grand Valley Artists Studio, 2661 29th St. Suite B, Grand Rapids, MI
Program: BETH BEULOW
CREATING PERSONALLY ICONIC IMAGERY
While it’s fun and energizing to capture iconic locations and scenes, what’s possible when we focus instead on the more personally meaningful? There's a drive nature photographers share to seek out and capture the iconic landmarks and vistas. We’ll explore a different way of seeing “icons” and how they reflect on your creative vision. We'll turn a few definitions on their head and look at how to release "epic location FOMO" in service to creating a body of work that reflects your distinct vision.
Beth Buelow is an award-winning Michigan-based artist, coach, and educator who specializes in abstract and minimalist photography. Her guiding creative philosophy is “If you’re not amazed, you’re not paying attention.”
Since Beth’s intention is to reflect the amazing world around us, her photography doesn’t fit neatly into one particular genre or subject. No matter the subject, her work often conveys a sense of calm, order, mystery, experimentation, contrarianism, and/or balance.
This promises to be a program that will stretch your boundaries as a photographer!

Following our program we will have a short social break. We will conclude the meeting by showing the September Competition images.
Guests are always welcome, we suggest a $5 donation for non-members. Members are always free.

GRCC September Photo Talk
Online ZOOM Meeting
Wednesday, September 24, 2025 @ 7 p.m.Meeting ID: 828 2774 9280
Passcode: 943871Would you love to get some feedback on a photo? Maybe something you’ve submitted for competition in the past, and you have some questions about how you might have gotten a better score? Or maybe you’re unsure how to edit a photo, and would like to solicit some opinions from some of your fellow photographers? Or maybe you’re just excited about a photo you’ve taken and want to share it with others? Then this Zoom meeting is for you.
During our session, you can tell us about why, where, and when you took it, what kind of gear you used, and what kind of editing decisions you’ve made in processing the photo. Then, if (and only if) you’d like, we’ll open up the discussion for others to offer comments and critiques. This month, let’s concentrate on MACRO images. We’ll also spend a few minutes at the beginning talking about some of the nuts and bolts of focus-stacking, a technique commonly used with macro photography.
You can share your photo via Zoom screen sharing, but if you are unsure of how to do that, or uncomfortable with Zoom you may email your images to Norbert Kugele at nfkugs@mac.com. Please no more than 3 photos in .jpg format (no more than 2160 pixels on the long side) Please understand that depending on attendance we may not get to all 3 of your images.
Everyone is welcome even if you just want to listen in and not share any images.

Grand Valley Artists Studio, 2661 29th St. Suite B, Grand Rapids, MI
Program: ALLEN BROOKS
TOPIC: RULES OF COMPOSITION
How to use century old composition techniques used by some of the worlds greatest artists. Allen was a professional photographer, studio owner, and a guy with a lot of awards. When he closed his studio, he wanted to do the “artsy stuff” - you know - Fine Art Photography.
Allen says, “ I was confident, no sweat. Boy was I wrong! At best I was mediocre. I decided my failing was composition so I researched everything I could about composition until it was an obsession. This program “Composition” is the results of my findings.”
Allen fell in love with photography when he was 12 and has passionately loved it ever since. He grew up in suburban Detroit. After serving in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War, he returned and took a job at a studio in Chicago, and subsequently opened a studio with a partner. He returned to Detroit and opened Allen Brooks Studio. In 2024, after 23 years in business he retired and moved to Holland M. Allen is currently serving as GRCC VP of Programs.
Following our program we will have a short social break. We will conclude the meeting by showing the November Competition images.
Guests are always welcome, we suggest a $5 donation for non-members. Members are always free.
