May Club Meeting
Wednesday, May 20 at 7:15 p.m.
Grand Valley Artists Studio, 2661 29th St. Suite B, Grand Rapids, MI
Program: Embracing the Blur: Intentional Camera Movement Photography
Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) is a creative photography technique using long exposures and deliberate physical motion to produce abstract, painterly images. By varying shutter speed, physical movement, movement speed one can transform literal scenes into ethereal compositions of light and color.
The emphasis is on experimentation over precision, using movements such as panning, tilting, rotating, or zooming to strip away reality and reveal minimalist or abstract forms.
This program is a look at my journey of exploring ICM; I invite you to join and explore your world with a slightly less technical outlook. We’ll explore:
* What ICM is all About
* Why do Intentional Camera Movement?
* Techniques to use for ICM
* Subjects for ICM?
* Equipment and Settings to use for ICM
We'll look at some selected examples of ICM and see how ICM can change the view.
Read more about our presenter below.
Following our program we will have a short social break. We will conclude the meeting by showing the May Competition images. Competition prints for May will also be on display.
Guests are always welcome, we suggest a $5 donation for non-members. Members are always free.
About Michael Koole
As a hobbyist photography enthusiast, Michael uses photography to view the world differently. Looking beyond the he obvious, his goal is to see everyday items from a different perspective and understand the details that comprise the whole of the subject – to see deeper: Past the Physical, Beyond the Aesthetics, Down the Core or the Subject. This approach has applied across multiple genres and keeps the adventure fresh and new.
“Capturing imagery that evokes curiosity in others and draw the viewer into a story is what compels my photography pursuits.”

GRCC May Photo Talk
& EDIT Challenge
WEDNESDAY, May 27 @ 7 p.m.
Would you like to get some feedback on a photo? Maybe you’re unsure how to edit a photo, and would like to solicit some opinions from some of your fellow photographers? Or maybe you’re just excited about a photo you’ve taken and want to share it with others? Then this Zoom meeting is for you.
During our session, you can tell us about why, where, and when you took it, what kind of gear you used, and what kind of editing decisions you’ve made in processing the photo. Then, if you’d like, we’ll open up the discussion for others to offer comments and critiques. At May’s meeting we are doing an Editing challenge. Everyone will edit the same image in advance and we will share our results and learn different editing techniques in the process. Click here to download the Edit Challenge image. Contact Norbert at nfkugs@mac.com if you have questions or issues with the download.
To prepare for sharing, select a few images you would like to share (max 3) and be ready to share your screen (we recommend you put the images in a folder on your desktop for easy access) If you aren't comfortable or are unfamiliar with how to share your screen you can submit your photos in advance - by email in .jpg format (maximum 2160 pixels on the long side) to Norbert Kugele at nfkugs@mac.com by the end of the day on Monday, May 25th. Depending on attendance, please understand we may not get to all of your images, so that everyone has an opportunity to get input.
NOTE: Everyone is welcome. You do NOT need to share images nor participate in the edit challenge in order to attend. If you prefer to just listen in and add your 2 cents worth to the conversation that is fine too.
